When we think of storage – the first place that comes to mind is the fridge. Unfortunately not everything can be refrigerated. What’s more unfortunate is that not many people know about it. It’s a common misconception that the colder the space, the fresher the food stays. Let’s look at some of the foods that should not be kept in the fridge.
Bread actually gets stale and dries out much quicker when placed in the fridge. It also makes the bread hard and chewy. Find a cool dry place to keep your bread and make sure to use it before the expiry date.
This tropical fruit actually has no natural defense against cold climate. The fridge actually causes bananas to rot instead of ripen. If you place green bananas in the fridge, they won’t turn yellow but will go straight to black. It’s always better to keep the bananas in the fruit basket or on the counter till they ripen.
Unpeeled onions need air to live longer. Putting them in the fridge will make them turn soft and moldy. This is because the cold temperature turns the starch into sugars, making the onions turn soggy faster. Onions can actually last for up to 30 days if they are stored in a cool, dark, dry place that’s not the fridge.
Garlic should also be stored in a cool, dry place. When stored in the fridge, the moisture causes garlic bulbs to sprout. It can make the garlic turn rubbery and moldy.
Provided the honey is sealed, it can stay good for a very long time. You don’t really need to store it in the fridge to preserve it. In fact, the cold temperatures speed up the crystallization process making it harder and dough like.
Oil Storing olive oil in the fridge makes it harder and thicker. Hence, it better to just store it in cool, dark cupboard, preferable away from the stove.
Keeping peanut butter in the fridge makes it dry and hard. To retain its smooth consistency, store the peanut butter in a cupboard.
Like onions, cold temperatures affect the texture, flavor and also the way potatoes cook. Do not store potatoes in plastic bags as they need to breathe so that they don’t rot too quickly. Keep them in a cool place or paper bag. 9.Avocados Ripe avocados can be kept in the fridge but if you have green avocados and want them to ripen, keep them out in the open or in open paper bags.
